JOB DESCRIPTION


OVERVIEW

The Irvington Presbyterian Church (IPC) is called to be an inclusive church that lives by faith, is known by God’s love, and gives hope a voice… IPC is a congregation that prides itself in being a steadfast member of the historic and historically-artistic neighborhood of Irvington, and IPC’s music department has been an integral part of contributing to and participating in the life of its community. The Director of Music (DoM) serves as the leader of this instrument of the church that provides both a unifying undertone for its overall ministry and declarative musical expressions that collectively aid in faith formation, spiritual nurturing, inclusive artistic expressions, and proclamations of hope for our congregation and world. The DoM is responsible for the development,

direction, and oversight of the department from the day-to-day administrative tasks to the ever-developing musical expressions of the IPC community.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Direct all regular and special services of the church as requested by the Pastor & Head of Staff, following with the policies and practices of IPC.

  2. Work in a supervisory role with the Organist of the church and any other paid music staff.

  3. Select appropriate service music for the choirs at the church and provide music in a timely manner to the Organist when accompaniment is needed.

  4. Conduct weekly rehearsals during a seasonal year (Labor Day through Memorial Day) for the Chancel Choir with the assistance of the Organist.

  5. Conduct regular rehearsals during a seasonal year for the Handbell Choir.

  6. Organize soloists and small performing groups as special music during the summer months.

  7. Work within a budget to obtain new sheet music, make special purchases, and attend workshops.

  8. Track, report and provide licensing information for live streaming purposes to the appropriate staff to ensure legal compliance for recording and video streaming.

  9. Work with the Organist on the maintenance of the organ and pianos at the church.

  10. Be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the handbells and other musical instruments at the church.

  11. Ensure that the choir robes receive regular cleaning.

  12. Maintain the choir room and the music library along with the music library records.

  13. Continue to find and develop ways to utilize the vocal and instrumental talents of the congregation through an enthusiastic and appropriately challenging volunteer music program.

  14. Facilitate opportunities, as they arise, for collaboration with local musicians, other church music programs, or community arts programs (e.g. Irvington Arts Collective).

  15. The Director of Music will have first right of refusal if their skills are requested for all weddings and funerals taking place at the church (an honorarium is traditionally provided on a per service basis, as agreed upon by the participating party).

  16. The Director of Music, along with the Organist and Session, shall be consulted if a request is made for someone outside the church to play the organ, piano, or any other church instrument.

  17. Approve a substitute director when approved by the Pastor & Head of Staff.


WORK SCHEDULE

  1. Sunday Services of Worship.

  2. Bell practice (traditionally held on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.)

  3. Chancel Choir Rehearsal (traditionally held Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.)

  4. The DoM is responsible for securing music for every Sunday.

  5. The actual time worked shall be determined by the demands of the various programs, practice, and activities, and will fluctuate seasonally, but is estimated to be less than 20 hours per week.

  6. Attend bi-monthly staff meetings.


WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  1. The Director of Music (DoM) works cooperatively with the pastoral staff and Worship Committee in planning music for the services of worship.

  2. The DoM may also work with other various boards and committees of Session as needed to accomplish the goals of the Session.

  3. The DoM will consult with the Pastor and Organist on a regular basis to ensure that the anthem, hymns, and other music reinforce the liturgical message planned.

  4. The DoM will provide information regarding the music ministry of IPC for bulletins, the annual report, etc. in appropriate form and in a timely manner.

  5. The Pastor serves as the Head of Staff with responsibility of coordinating the staff to accomplish the goals of the Session. The Pastor will supervise the day-to-day operation of the staff unless otherwise indicated.


BENEFITS

  2. The DoM may work from home the months of June and July.

  3. The DoM may take up to 3 Sundays off during the program year, with approval from the Pastor & Head of Staff.


EVALUATION

  1. The Personnel Committee will serve as the point of contact for expressions of any needs or concerns by members of the staff.

  2. Performance reviews will be conducted annually by the Personnel Committee (and pertinent committees as needed) and Pastor. The Personnel Committee will review the adequacy of the compensation and make recommendations to the Session.
