Campo Amistad

With the ever-increasing number of Hispanics/Latinos in central Indiana, we as a Presbytery are trying to reach out to the kids in this population. Although this population has many needs one need that is often overlooked is the spiritual health of the kids. We currently run a weeklong bilingual camp for Hispanic/Latino kids ages 8-12. The event takes place at the Presbytery’s Pyoca Camp and Conference Center, and the week is called “Campo Amistad” (Camp Friendship). Campo Amistad gives these kids a chance to hear the word of God and to have some fun and get away from the pressures of their daily lives in the inner city. They don’t have to worry about gangs, peer pressure or is there enough to eat today. At camp we will do a morning bible study, but actually the whole week or theme at camp is centered on God. As far as activities we will do crafts, swimming, hiking, games, and evening campfires. For the past six years we have been doing this camp and we have many returning kids every year. It is a continuing building of trust with these kids and their parents. In the first year of camp 2002 we had 8 kids attend camp, in 2003 we had 14. Attendance keeps growing, with 55 children attending in 2008. Because of the financial status of these families we offer the camp at no cost

The next Campo Amistad will take place August 3-7, 2009. For more information, contact Fabio Socarraz.
