Fort Wayne Bilingual VBS 2006

2006 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: BILINGUAL AND MULTICULTURAL!

by Rev. Leonel Pech

Fort Wayne, IN –July 24-28, 2006.  An average of 84 people daily, both children, youth and adults, had a wonderful time at VBS. With great enthusiasm and in an encouraging environment, the families were filled with the joy that comes from learning new songs, creating craft projects, participating in recreation and listen to the teachers talk about the main theme: “Overcome to Win!”

This first VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL was organized by PLAN (Presbyterian Latino Alliance Northeast) to take place July 24-28, 2006 for the Hispanic community.  The experience was truly multicultural, bilingual and family friendly!  It was an excellent celebration of our diversity!  The program took place at United Faith Presbyterian Church, 1616 W. Main Street here in Fort Wayne, IN.

The lessons were designed to motivate and guide the Hispanic families so that they can overcome difficulties they face day to day. What is most important is not to give up, but to be “more than conquerors” each day (Romans 8:37)! Pastor Hal Thomas said: “This is our way of saying to the more than 20,000 Hispanics that live in Fort Wayne that we really care for them and that we hope they succeed in all they do. ‘If God is for us, who is against us?’ (Romans 8:31)?”

The program ended with a fiesta  on Friday July 28. There was food, piñatas, lots of music, and a “moon walk.”  In the evaluations participants filled out, it was common to see comments like “we want more time for the lesson,” “do more events like these,” “this was great!”, “we loved it all.”

To all the participants, we say ¡MUCHAS GRACIAS!  And to our volunteers and teachers, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
